A twelve point winning margin was enough to give Castlemitchell another brace of points in the S.F.L. Div 3 game played in splendid conditions in Ballykelly on Sunday last.A strong team performance all round was the winning of this game .Ballykelly were first to score with a point from Andrew Kelly in the 5th Minute. Joe Maher and Tadhg Fennin replied within a minute with 2 points in the 6th and 7th minute. Andrew Kelly was again on hand to keep Ballykelly in the running with another pointed free. A brace from Tadhg Fennin put the visitors in the driving seat with some excellent midfield play where Castlemitchell's John Fennelly excelled. John O' Connor and Trevor Griffin pointed for Castlemitchell to put them ahead but on the 27th and 30th minute Andrew Kelly and Paul Muldowney pointed to keep the home side in the game but Castlemitchell were to have the last say of the half with another point from Tadhg Fennin and Michael Lawless to leave the half time score Castlemitchell 0-10 Ballykelly 0-5 Two minutes into the second half Castlemitchell continues their excellent and a well taken goal by Michael Lawless and 2 great from the boot of Corey Lammon . Andrew Kelly tried hard to keep Ballykelly in touch with a point from a free but Michael Lawless 2 Tadhg Fennin and Karol Harris a point each put Castlemitchell on the road to victory. Paul Muldowney added another point for Ballykelly but it was no help and Castlemitchell came away worthy winners. Final Score. Castemitchell 1-16 Ballykelly 0-7. An excellent Castlemitchell team performance gained two valuable away points in Nurney. The game started with Mickie Behan and Ricky Moriarty exchanging points. Castlemitchell's Jonathan Fennell pointed free was quickly answered by Behan with a low powerful shot that shook Ger Mahers net. However, Castlemitchell upped a gear and Jonathan Fennell and Mickie Lawless pointed from frees. They both were on the score sheet again with a point each to leave the half time score Nurney 1-01, Castlemitchell 0-06. The second half started with good defending by Mick Wynne, Mark Fanning and Paddy Fennelly for Castlemitchell. Ricky Moriarty added another pointed free. But Nurney replied with three points from Behan, George Sexton and Sean Bracken to level the match. Castlemitchell regained their shape and Ricky Moriaty was on the end of a well delivered Graham Evans pass to bury the ball in the Nurney net. Castlemitchell gained another 2 points in the league when they defeated neighbours Rheban in an exciting and tight game on Sat lat. Emmett Hyland opened for Castlemitchell within five minutes with a point. Shane Rowan then scored a point from a free for Rheban. After a good move involving three Castlemitchell players Jason Rowan pointed for his side. Shane Rowan put Rheban ahead for the first time with 2 points but Trevor Griffin then added 2 points for Castlemitchell from play. Sahne Rowan again kept his side in touch with a pointed free. A brilliant score from play from the boot of Tomas Fitzgerald put Castlemitchell ahead and Joe Maher pointed from a free in the 23rd minute. John Owens pointed for Rheban but Trevor Griffin finished the half with a good point from play. Half Time: Castlemitchell 0-7 Rheban 0-5. Castlemitchell now playing against the wind started the 2nd half with a point from play from Emmett Hyland. Shane Rowan kept Rheban in touch with another pointed free. Tomas Fitzgerald again pointed from play to keep his side ahead. Michael O' Connor then pointed from play for Rheban but Castlemitchell's Joe Maher was on hand to score 2 excellent long range frees to put his side 2 points ahead with ten minutes to go. Stephen Lawler and John Owens pointed from play but Trevor Griffin was again on hand to point in the 28th minute and the game was over as a contest. Milltown 0-05 Castlemitchell 5-09 A late start to the Div 5 fixture didn’t deter Castlemitchell taking the points away to Milltown. Craig Dunphy got the scoring underway with a point followed by two superb 45s from Micky Lawless. Miltown replied with two points by Jason Dunne and David Hannon. Lawless was on target for Castlemitchell with a point following a good passing move. This left the half time score Milltown 0-02, Castlemitchell 0-04. Milltown left the minimum between the teams after the restart with a point from Philly Coleman. However Castlemitchell took over at midfield and supplied the forwards who notched up the scores. Points from Micky Lawless, Craig Dunphy and 1-01 from Ricky Moriarty put daylight between the teams. Two goals each from Jimmy and Jonathan Fennell put the game out of reach for Milltown. Cappagh 0-01 Castlemitchell 5-13 Castemitchell made the long journey to Cappagh on Saturday last and came home with 2 valuable points with a great win over an injury ridden Cappagh side. This was a one sided affair from start to finish and Jason Rowan had Castlemitchell on the scoreboard within 10 mins with 2 nice points. Paul McDonagh again pointed before scoring 2 wonderful goals with some good play from Jason Rowan to put Castlemitchell in the driving seat.Trevor Griffin pointed to leave the half time score Castlemitchell 2-4 while Cappagh had yet to score. The second half started as before with Castlemitchell scoring at will. Cappagh's case was not helped when they were reduced to 14 men when one of there players received a second yellow card. However Rathcoffey never gave up and were in contention throughout the match with consistant scoring. Ballymore Eustace 2-10 Castlemitchell 3-07 Castlemitchell's second team travelled to Ballymore for the start of the Div 5 South League and shared the points in an entertaining game. Castlemitchell were quick off the blocks with Paul McDonagh and Michael Lawless getting two points each. However Ballymore replied with six unanswered points. Ricky Moriarty and Michael were on form to score a point each but the home team put light between the teams with a goal and two points. Ricky was at the end of a good Castlemitchell move and gave the Ballymore goalkeeper no chance to leave the half time score Ballymore 1-08, Castlemitchell 1-06. It was Ballymore’s turn to get a flying start to the second half with their second goal but this triggered Castlemitchell’s Jonathan Fennell to score two well taken goals. He was on hand again to put Castlemitchell two points ahead with a point from a free. But with light fading the home team did good work to level the game and share the points. Castlemitchell 3-06 v 2-07 Sarsfields Castlemitchell captured the Dowling Cup for the second year in a row with a good win over a young Sarsfields team in Nurney on Monday last. Playing against a stiff breeze Castlemitchell's Michael Lawless opened the scoring with a point from a free in the 5th minute. John Geraghty replied with a point from play for Sarsfields. The Sarsfields team were far superior in every position on the field and aided by the breeze Conor Walsh 2 and John Geraghty again in the 11th minute brought the score to 4 points to 1 for Sarsfields. Lawless added another point from a free again. Then Sarsfields gave Castlemitchel the killer blow with a good goal from Conor Walsh in the 30th minute and another 2 points from Darragh Horan and Matty Byrne to leave the half time score Sarsfields1-6 Castlemitchell 2pts. Castlemitchell started the 2nd half on a positive note with a point from play from Brendan Maher. Then Michael Lawless kept Castlemitchell in touch with a great goal after ten mins. Trevor Griffin again pointed from play for Castlemitchell to leave only 2 points between the sides. Sarsfields were gifted a goal when a mix up in the Castlemitchell defense allowed Conor Walsh fire to the net. Castlemitchell were awarded a 45 and Michael Lawless took a shot which ended in the Sarsfields net. Then playing with a ferocious pace and with 4 mins to go Castlemitchell were awarded a penalty after great play from Paul McDonagh and Tadhg Fennin. Michael Lawless duly converted bringing his personal tally to 3-3. Sarsfields could only reply with a point from Kieran Aspell. Tadhg Fennin finished the scoring for Castlemitchell with a point. Castlemitchell 1-10 v 1-06 Grange Castlemitchell the holders qualified for the final of the Dowling Cup on Sat last with a good win over neighbours Grange in Castlemitchell. After 15 mins Tadhg Fennin had Castlemitchell 2 points up from frees before Timmy Doyle opened Grange's account with a pointed free. Castlemitchell's Paul McDonagh and Grange's Paddy Rowan exchanged points. Following good play from Castlemitchell Fennin again pointed from play. Michael Lawless came from his goal to point from a 45 to increase Castlemitchell's lead but Timmy Doyle was again on hand to point for Grange. Castlemitchell closed off the first half with points from Emmett Hyland and Fennin again to leave the score at the interval Castlemitchell 0-7 Grange 0-3. Castlemitchell started the second half with a point from a free from Kieran Harris and Keith Leigh replied for Grange. Fennin was again on hand to finish a good outfield move by Kieran O' Toole. Grange sub Lar Nolan kept his team in touch when he pointed from play but Fennin replied again to push Castlemitchell ahead. Keith Leigh pointed a free for Grange. A high ball into the Grange defense came back off the post and Emmett Hyland coolly tapped to the net. In an exciting finish Grange then were awarded a penalty which Timmy Doyle duly converted but it was too little too late and Castlemitchellheld out for a convincing win.
