Castlemitchell Ladies gained their first points in this year’s Senior Ladies Division 1 League with a four point win over a strong Eadestown team.
The visitors settled early in the game and had two points from Liah Whyte inside the first six minutes. The second of which had goal written all over it except for excellent work by full back Jamie Curtis who got a vital touch to see it over the bar.
Castlemitchell had some good possession but were guilty of some serious wides. After Eadestown added a third point with a free from Denise Sexton, Castlemitchell nerves were eventually settled with a Linsey Donovan point.
Both sets of defences excelled in this match with both centre half backs – Eadestown’s Grace Clifford and Castlemitchell’s Ruth Kaiser giving an exhibition of skill, strength and determination.
After Sue Bronson extended the lead for the visitors, Castlemitchell went on a scoring spree. Excellent work by Aoife May, Nicola Lawless and Avril Kelly contributed to Niamh Mulhall’s goal and three points. On the stroke of half time Aisling Delahunt fed a great pass to Rhona Mulhall who pointed to leave the score Castlemitchell 1-05 Eadestown 0-04 at the break.
The second half started like the first with Eadestown adding a point each from Grace Clifford and Aoife Herbert. They could have taken the lead except for great saves by Castlemitchell’s net minder Laura Fennelly. This spurred Castlemitchell on to take control of the game with Niamh Mulhall adding her fourth point and Carol Redmond pointing a rebound. Nicola Lawless put further light between the teams when she netted a long range effort.
To their credit, Eadestown never gave up. Their continued pressure was rewarded with a well taken goal from Liah Whyte.
Well done to both teams who gave a sporting, skillful and enjoyable display of Ladies football.
