Castlemitchell 2 – 10
v Carbury 0 – 06
Castlemitchell Ladies travelled to the Centre of Excellence in Hawkfield to take on Carbury in a very entertaining Division 2 League final.
Having beaten Naas by six points to one the previous week in the league semi final, Castlemitchell, however, did not come into this match over confident as Carbury had beaten them in a previous round of the league.
Nicola Lawless got Castlemitchell off to a good start with a well taken point after 2 minutes but Carbury then increased the pressure and had good points from Kelly Aungier, Karen Cummins and Joanne McLoughlin. These points were closely followed by what could have been the games first goal, again at the hands of Cummins, prevented only by excellent work by Laura Fennelly. Carbury battled hard but failed to convert scores from a lot of possession they had.
The Castlemitchell backs were outstanding; Elaine Fennelly, Laoise Langton, Laura Pender and Deirdre Harris had fine performances, making Carbury forwards shoot from impossible angles at times. Aoife May and Steffi Fennelly won some great ball in midfield and this led to a goal and two points from Mary Lawless. Both teams lost a player each due to a yellow card before the break. Carbury finished the half with a second point from Karen Cummins. Half time score Castlemitchell 1 -03 Carbury 0 -04.
Castlemitchell were not going to let this final pass easily and battled hard for possession. Carol Redmond and Ruth Kasier covered every blade of grass in Hawkfield. Aisling Hyland scored two super points to double the scores. Aisling was on hand again to supply a long ball to Mary Lawless who blasted pass Hannah Gilligan in the Carbury goal. Jamie Curtis and Emma Foley’s great tackles on Carbury forwards were rewarded with two more Lawless points.
Catherine O’Malley finished off a good move for Carbury with a point. Fouls on Lynsey Donovan in the Castlemitchell forward line ensured two easy points from frees for Mary Lawless. This brought Mary's total for the league to 12 goals and 60 points. Some achievement! Credit to Carbury, they never gave up and were rewarded with another Karen Cummins point.
Castlemitchell subs Claire Maher, Niamh Delahunt and Jackie Moriarty were excellent when introduced. Castlemitchell finished off the game with a great move from Carol Redmond who passed to Aoife May, who in turn found Nicola Lawless with a long pass. Nicola went on a typical run and scored a lovely point to leave the full time score Castlemitchell 2 - 10, Carbury 0 - 06.
